The Vice-President Supports Widespread ‘Doxing’ Campaign Against Charlie Kirk Detractors

Monday night, a major effort to publicly identify, intimidate, and harass people perceived as not sufficiently mourning the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was endorsed by JD Vance.

During a guest appearance on the late commentator’s show, Vance stated that those who witness anyone applauding Charlie’s murder” should “call them out”. He further added: “In fact, call their employer. We are opposed in political violence, but we strongly support in respect, and there is zero respect in the celebration of political assassination.”

Over recent days, numerous workers across various fields—including university faculty to an commercial aviator—were terminated due to their remarks about Kirk’s death.

An anonymous online platform that began collecting submissions of critical rhetoric claimed it had received more than sixty-three thousand reports. Originally named “Expose Charlie’s Murderers”, the site rebranded on Monday to the “Charlie Kirk Data Foundation”.

Allies of Donald Trump have attempted to link Kirk’s killing—without evidence—to what they describe as a organized leftwing “extremist” network that endorses political violence. These claims have raised fears of a severe crackdown on expression.

On the show, the Vice-President stated that the government would “work to dismantle the institutions that promote aggression and terrorism in our nation”.

Joining Vance on the podcast was Trump’s deputy chief of staff, who pledged to take action on what he called a “vast homegrown extremist network” he held responsible for Kirk’s death.

“With God as my witness,” he stated, “we are going to use every resource at the Department of Justice, DHS, and throughout this administration to locate, disrupt, dismantle, and eliminate these networks.”

Ideological affiliations of the assailant are not yet known, and the United States has witnessed a wave of attacks in recent years that has affected both liberals and conservatives.

However, the broad effort has also ensnared those who expressed disapproval of the late commentator, a Christian nationalist with a history of misogynistic and racist remarks. A number have only quoted the commentator’s statements or been targeted for failing to grieve his passing.

An example of a target was military officer Christopher Ladnier, who quoted the commentator on the day of his assassination. Among the quotes were his referring to the Civil Rights Act as a “beast” that “has now turned into an anti-white weapon”, and his claim that certain gun deaths are the price of the right to bear arms.

GOP-led states such as Florida, the Sooner State, and Texas have launched inquiries into educators accused of making inappropriate statements following last week’s assassination. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces has encouraged members of the public to identify those who “celebrate or mock” the death, and confirmed that several service members have faced dismissal for their remarks.

Calls for a crackdown by the Vice-President and additional administration figures have evoked memories of some of the most troubling chapters in US history.

“Official participation in this does inch it nearer to resembling McCarthyism,” said a free speech advocate of the free speech organization, evoking the 1950s campaign to root out leftists that resulted in false allegations and destroyed livelihoods. “It was not a proud era for open discourse.”

Democrats have themselves been victims of ideologically motivated attacks recently, such as the June assassination of a MN elected official and her husband, and the 2022 beating of ex-congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s partner in their San Francisco residence.
